150 tonnes of tomatoes. 22,000 people. One hour. Absolutely no pasta in sight.
On 26 August 2026, the peaceful Spanish town of Buñol transformed into what can only be described as the world’s largest outdoor tomato blender.
Welcome to La Tomatina, the annual festival where thousands of perfectly reasonable adults travel from around the world to throw tomatoes at complete strangers.
This year’s edition brought together around 22,000 participants, seven truckloads of tomatoes, and an impressive 150 tonnes of red ammunition. Within minutes, the streets, buildings, clothes, and practically everything else had turned into a gigantic sea of tomato pulp.

A Chef’s Perspective
Now, as professional chefs, we have a few questions.
First, who ordered 150 tonnes of tomatoes? Second, where exactly do you store them? And finally, how do you explain this particular food cost to your restaurant accountant?
Imagine the kitchen briefing:
“Excellent, Chef! Where are the pots?”
“No pots today. We’re using the entire town.”
To be fair, these tomatoes were specially grown for the festival and were not intended for eating. At least nobody is throwing perfectly good San Marzano tomatoes around. That would be a culinary crime.

From a Food Fight to a World-Famous Tradition
The story began back in 1945 with an impromptu food fight. Somehow, what might normally earn you a lifetime ban from a restaurant became one of Spain’s most famous annual celebrations.
Today, La Tomatina attracts visitors from across the world, all eager to experience sixty minutes of spectacular, ridiculous, tomato-covered chaos. And perhaps that’s the secret. Sometimes the best memories come from doing something completely unnecessary, wonderfully silly, and impossible to explain to your grandmother.
